Returning a lost wallet gains unemployed veteran Chuck Scott (Robert Cummings) a job as chauffeur to Eddie Roman (Steve Cochran), a seeming gangster whose enemies have a way of meeting violent ends. The job proves nerve-wracking, and soon Chuck finds himself pledged to help Eddie's lovely, fearful, prisoner-wife Lorna (Michèle Morgan) to escape.
The result leaves Chuck caught like a rat in a trap, vainly seeking a way out through dark streets. But the real chase begins when the strange plot virtually starts all over again...

Subject: Could have been better.
The ending just didn't work; with more effort the screenwriter could have come up with a better one. I knew something was wrong when the woman was killed
...
off too early; everything after that seemed anti-climatic. Possibly if the brunette-who-hated-cops had turned into a love interest after the blonde dropped dead. Why not?...the characters fall in love at first sight. Bob Cummings always struck me as a lightweight actor -- certainly no match for these heavyweight bad guys. (As another reviewer noted.) Peter Lorrie is just great. Such a weird little man with that strange voice -- gotta love/hate the guy. The movie should have been called "Detour" for that's what the movie does; but no, there's already a film noir titled "Detour."

I didn't care for this movie. To me the film didn't make sense, I thought they were editing parts out of it, like Chuck buying the knife, and then Chuck
...
waking up all feverish, I thought someone had poisoned him or something, he was in his room again and I guess at that point I realized he was dreaming, which was outlandish. Bob Cummings (whom I love) looked sheepish and acted rather whimpy throughout the whole movie, not having any chemistry with the leading lady didn't help matters. I didn't like the idea of him fooling around with a married woman even if her husband was the evil Steve Cochran. In my opinion adding Peter Lorre could not even help this film.

I'd never heard of this before but found it extremely entertaining and well made. Very good acting, especially from the two "heavies"--Peter Lorre shows
...
that he had more talent than Hollywood could usually harness. Bob Cummings was also very good as was the female lead. Some nice twists and turns in the well written plot as befits a film noir. This film deserves more and better publicity than it's gotten!

This print is a bit dark. However, there's also a brighter print elsewhere on the

archive (as an 884MB H264 video/AAC audio MPEG-4 file), which makes for better viewing of the night scenes.
The film itself is a fine thriller that will keep you guessing, although the plot is a bit far-fetched. Steve Cochran, Peter Lorre and Robert Cummings all turn in solid acting performances. I found the music enjoyable as well.

THE CHASE is a very interesting film. It's a pretty classic "noir" film. And that is exactly the kind of stuff I love. This is an excellent pick for download.

Robert Cummings was never a satisfying actor. He always had to be tolerated. This film is no exception. Steve Cochran and Peter Lorre, however, perform
...
wonderfully here. Cochran manages to be seriously scary, and Lorre is in fine form as the ruthless henchman. The plot twists make up for the otherwise formulaic story. The musical score is good; great in parts (bet. 57 min. -> 1 hour). In all, quite good. Very well worth watching.

As a previous reviewer stated, the film does seem a bit far fetched. Admittedly the mid film twist was quite unexpected and entertaining.

There was a lot to like about this movie --- not least of which being the scenes of Havana. Were those shot on location? I thought they were very authentic
...
(although I was never in 1940s Havana, of course). But the sheer enregy and mystery was very well done, I thought. The whole thing was visually lush and extravagant and deco/nouveau.
I give the plot an "A" for effort; a spin on the lady in peril with her spouse of pure menace and his ubiquitious organization of murderers. But Bob Cummings, wow! What a surprise --- dark and cynical and emotionally wounded, barely holding himself together in his postwar pain. I had only seen his silly 1950s persona as the skirt-chasing photographer....and was not aware he could be so noir. He did a great job. I had a lot of fun watching this.

I really don't understand what happened in a, perhaps "the", critical plot point of this movie. Otherwise, it was enjoyable. Murky and noirish, for sure.

A pretty good movie that keeps the viewer wondering what'll happen next all the way 'til the end. I'm in agreement with the previous writer (earplay) that

one transition of events is difficult to follow. Peter Lorre is marvelously cold and heartless and Robert Cummings bewildered as usual. People sure knew how to be nasty even back in the '40's.
